|tram works in flinders st over easter
||[Mar. 19th, 2008|12:42 am]
over easter long weekend there is major road works the corner of Swanston and Flinders Streets.|
Flinders Street Closed 21-25 March 2008 (Easter)
* Flinders Street will be closed* to traffic between Queen Street and Exhibition Street from 5am Friday 21 March until 5am Tuesday 25 March.
* Flinders Street will be closed* to traffic between King Street and William Street from 5am Saturday 22 March until the morning of Monday 24 March.
*Local traffic will be able to access properties between King Street and Elizabeth Street and between Russell Street and Exhibition Street.
Swanston Street closed at Flinders Street 21-25 March 2008 (Easter)
* St Kilda Road northbound traffic will be diverted at Southbank Boulevard until 5am Tuesday 25 March.
* Swanston Street southbound traffic will turn at Flinders Lane until 5am Tuesday 25 March.
The road closures are required to safely upgrade the tram tracks and to begin construction of the platform tram stop. Construction activities will generate the most noise after 3pm on Friday 21 March and in the morning of Saturday 22 March. During the road closures, pedestrians will not be able to cross Flinders Street at Swanston Street. Pedestrians will be able to cross at either Elizabeth Street or Russell Street or from Flinders Street Station via the Degraves Street pedestrian subway.
So all trams along flinders and swanston will be disrupted.
this may be a hinderence for those of you travelling on PT.
specially those going to the comedy festival and needing to get to shows on time. (which starts tomorrow! and how i found out about this road works )
so if you want to take advantage of the cheap preview easter weekend tickets of the comedy festival, and get make sure you allow a bit of extra time for travel or buying/picking up tickets, or getting to venues (specially those shows at venues beside the yarra/fed square, or indeed if you need to travel on any of the tram lines affected to get anywhere in or through the city over the weekend :)
metlink tram disruption info
more info and pdf map available at vic roads
A good alternative for anyone catching PT and heading north into the city from Flinders Street Station (ie, to the comedy festival) it would be easy enough to get off at parliament and walk down collins, or even go to Melbourne Central and catch a tram down Swanston. :)
I think that's what I'm planning to do.
Also, thanks for the info. :D I wasn't aware it was going to happen.

the pamphlet I have about it says no trams running on swanston, between the art centre and la Trobe st , which differs from the metlink web page info that i pasted above which says they will go to flinders lane .. *shrug* who know which is correct ;p

I suppose it's not much of a walk down from melbourne central, though? I do it all the time, when I can't be bothered waiting for the train from flinders to do the loop when I want to go home. :D
Correct, though it's no trams between the Arts Centre and Lonsdale actually; they can't run trams southbound past Lonsdale as Lonsdale is the only place trams can turn around and head back. What's interesting is that they're not running shuttle buses to cover the lack of trams.
Trams on 48, 70 and 75 along Flinders heading into the city stop at Russell St, which is only a block from Swanston so people on those routes will be okay.
The no-pedestrian-crossing-at-Flinders-and-Swanston thing - right across Easter - is almost guaranteed to lead to a lot of angry people, both the drunken kind and the got-to-get-somewhere kind :)
I didn't know about it until today from the comedy fest office .
they still only have moomba festival disruptions / grand prix , notices up on the tram stops near me ( I get the 70, 48 and 75 trams from richmond.
though on my way home this evening i noticed they had started dismantling the stop out side flinders station

It's very thoughtful of you to post this here - thanks.
Was about to say something along those lines. I like posts like these, where the only point of the post is to let others know about important things like this.
